10.0 Miles

March 21, 2013

Properly smashed my run yesterday!

My intention was to run roughly 4 or 5 miles and then follow that up with a rest today and an 8 mile personal best for distance (my previous is 6 miles) on Friday at an average pace of 10 minutes per mile.

A few miles into the run I was feeling great so I just decided to just keep going and see where it ended up. When I hit 6 miles I figured why not just push through to 8 miles and take the personal best a few days early. And then when I hit 8 miles, I found some extra motivation to push through to the 10 mile mark.

Not only did I smash my distance personal best by 65% (6 miles to 10 miles) but I also managed to achieve an average pace of 8.59 minutes per mile! The other thing I am really pleased about is that from a cardiovascular perspective I almost didn’t need any recovery time, it felt incredibly comfortable. My knees are another story though – they are really painful right now and I definitely need to be careful not to push things too hard or I will pick up an injury.

My stretch goal for running the half marathon in 2.10 with a ‘be pleased with anything between 2.10 and 2.30′ seems a bit pathetic now – sub 2.00 is perhaps on the cards.

It’s hard to think that only 7 weeks ago I was running 1.88 miles and had to stop once in the middle and was out of breath from almost the get go and needed 5-10 minutes to recover properly afterwards.

Yesterdays run stats in a bit more detail:
