Facebook and iPad no more?

August 4, 2012

I haven’t used my iPad for about 3 months and today I deactivated my Facebook account.

I just kinda realised this week that I really got zero value from using Facebook – it’s just a time sync. About 6 months ago I culled my friends list down from 450 people to around 50 people  - simply to get rid of the noise and just get updates from people I care about.

However, out of those 50 or so people probably only about 3 or 4 are people that I am close friends with and I speak to them offline regularly anyway. I really don’t see the value in keeping up to date with friends outside of  my really close friendship circle and and the temptation to check Facebook a number of times (damn you Facebook!) and the time wasted by doing that far outweighs any value anyway.

As for the iPad, I really don’t know why I’ve lost interest in it. Probably since I bought a MacBook Air and tend to find sitting on the sofa or carrying it with me is SO easy. If I travel I will take it with me, but that’s rare anyway. Having said that I want to be more up to date with games/apps that are being released in iOS and theres no doubt about it, the IPad is an awesome bit of kit – so I am going to make a big effort to get into it again.

Most of my time online is going to be spent with Twitter, Linkedin and Google Reader. They are a good combination for staying connected with great people and discovering great content.

I’m struggling with FB for the same reasons. I keep thinking if I hide everyone but 50-75 people, it will work for me. But now, that seems like a waste of time! :-) The iPad is different for me. I live on that thing.
