I put a lot of effort into curating my social media feeds, so I can discover great content. By great, I mean things that might spark an idea, and have the potential to have a big impact on my life. Below are five things I’ve read, listened to, or watched recently that I think are really special:
1. The JRE MMA Show #47 with Tyson Fury is a truly amazing interview between Tyson Fury and Joe Rogan.
Tyson Fury is an undefeated British heavyweight boxer. His story is incredible. Rags to riches. Defying the odds to beat Wladimir Klitschko and become heavyweight champion of the world. Falling into a lifestyle of drinking, taking drugs, binge eating and ballooning up to 400lbs. Battling deep depression.
He’s now sober, 265lbs, optimistic and back on track to fight Deontay Wilder for the WBC heavyweight title later this year. There are some great takeaways — particularly around strategies for tackling depression and managing your mood.
2. Why Procrastinators Procrastinate and The Procrastination Matrix is a two part article series. It absolutely nails why people procrastinate and how to spend more time on things that really matter It’s very different to every other procrastination article I’ve read. It doesn’t try and dole out the typical advice (which procrastinators already know, but are unable to follow). I gets right to the heart of the issue and offers very practical advice. It’s also brilliantly funny and has loads of cool illustrations.
3. How We Prefer to Act Rather Than Think is such a great reminder that we tend to have a bias for doing, and don’t spend nearly enough time on strategic reflection. I think this is true both personally and professionally. It’s too easy to get caught up in busyness and lose your way with things. It reminds me of this quote:
‘Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things’ — Peter Drucker
4. I’ve just started Atomic Habits by James Clear. I’m about 25% of the way through and I can already tell it’s going to be a contender for my all time favourite book. It’s brilliantly written (James is one of my favourite writers) and full of great, practical advice so far. And it aligns with my own thinking on goal setting and getting things done. Everyone should read this. Here are two quotes from the book that stood out for me so far:
‘Your outcomes are a lagging measure of your habits’
‘You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems’
5. The Danger of Being an Excitement Junkie: How to Recover from Burnout and Actually Rest is an interview between Brad Stulberg and Sonya Looney. Brad is the co-author of Peak Performance. I love his advice on how to define rest, dealing with perfectionism, and how to live a happier, balanced life. He’s a really smart guy.
